Viet Nam 1970 - Approaching Vung Rho Bay landing beach Notice that big monolithic rock in the upper left hand corner? It was massive! That picture was taken about 20 miles away, from the South. We knew that our area was infested with Viet Cong and the Korean Tiger Division provided a lot of security for us. Their intelligence found out that there was a large system of caves (hospitals, barracks, storage, etc) under that rock and they focused a lot of their operations and night ambushes on the area but was never able to gain access to the cave system. Sometimes, the Navy would come in, sit 10 or 15 miles off-shore and use the rock as a target for their 16 inch guns. We had a small contingent of Navy personnel at our port and they would alert us when the Navy was coming in. We would go to the Officers' Club at Tuy Hoa AFB, sit on the patio, drink beer and take bets on whether or not they could score a hit. We could hear the guns fire and a short time later we would see a puff of white smoke-a hit- but barely noticeable. If they missed there was a rather large explosion up there on the mountain. Great fun!
